Ground Hog’s Day!

Posted by on February 2, 2016

I love Ground Hog’s Day.  The modern iteration of it is silly and fun, and I embrace it with enthusiasm.  I love the idea of a furry little critter poking his head out and foretelling the weather.  Especially when educated higher beings seem to take foretelling the weather so seriously yet they turn out wrong so often.

Today is an extra special Ground Hog’s Day – it is also a snow day for me.  The phone rang at 5:30 this morning to tell me so.  YAY!  The only trouble with having a snow day today is that I’m not sharing the silly fun-ness of this special holiday with my 5th graders.  I’ll have to give them the paper cut outs of a ground hog to decorate tomorrow, and we will talk retrospectively about the fact that the poor little guy probably couldn’t even find is way out of his burrow seeing as how the snow was piled about 18 inches above his door.  No doubt, however, due to the ground blizzard and overcast sky, he would have not seen his shadow.  More reason for celebration!  An early spring!  YAY again!

Until tomorrow, then, I am snuggled securely into my burrow, enjoying a free day.  When Karl gets home (he did not have a snow day- Boo!), we will have a nice dinner and do what we have done for the last eight or nine years – we’ll watch the movie Ground Hog’s Day on DVD, and look forward to Spring.
